Long History of Knee Pain
Like many knee pain sufferers, Charlotte's symptoms developed over time. She started experiencing discomfort many years ago and has run the gamut of treatment options ever since - from pain pills to steroid injections to arthroscopic surgery.
Pain became the norm for Charlotte, but she still led a full life. She traveled often, enjoyed walking and rode her exercise bike whenever she could. Over time, however, the pain became too much.
"My husband and I used to walk a lot when we traveled," she says. "But because my knee would start hurting too much too quickly, we couldn't even go to museums anymore."
Charlotte's knee pain eventually became too much for her day-to-day life, too. She couldn't go downstairs to her basement. She had trouble taking care of her dogs. And her school librarian job turned into a knee pain sufferer's worst nightmare.
"I did a lot of work installing and repairing computers," Charlotte recalls. "It meant a lot of crawling around on the floor for cords and things like that. It got so very difficult for me."
Yet the big turning point for Charlotte came when her primary care doctor sent her to an orthopaedic surgeon, who told her she had osteoarthritis.
Treatment with Synvisc-One
The orthopaedic surgeon recommended a total knee replacement. Despite her long history of pain, Charlotte wasn't ready for such an extreme measure. Instead, she sought a second opinion and went to another specialist. While in the waiting room with her daughter, she read a brochure about Synvisc-One.
"Then the doctor came in, saw that we were reading the brochure and said that's what he was going to recommend because the other treatments hadn't worked in the past," she says.
Charlotte had a great experience with Synvisc-One, starting with the treatment process itself: "From the point he walked in to prep me for the shot, I was in and out within seven minutes."
Turning the Page
Synvisc-One relieved Charlotte's knee pain, which made a tremendous impact on her life. She's walking more than ever. She's going to ballgames and museums again. And while she left the library for a marketing job that's physically easier, the pain relief is something that never ceases to amaze.
She's even taken that good feeling on the road. Charlotte recently tested her driving knee on a trek to Wisconsin - something she never would've been able to do with knee pain.
"It's about 485 miles each way and I didn't have the problems with driving that I had before Synvisc-One," she says. "I feel so much better all around. Just the fact that I don't experience as much pain gives me a better well-being, a more positive mood."
